Mitigation of climate change and environmental impacts / LCA

Life Cycle Analysis (LCA)

What is LCA? Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) is a standardized method (ISO 14040) that allows for an environmental evaluation of a product or service:

  • Multi-criteria: based on various criteria (climate, eutrophication, resources, water, etc.).
  • Multi-stage: covers the entire life cycle (“cradle-to-grave”).

What is its objective ? LCA serves as a decision-making tool! Internally, it can lead to eco-design projects, material efficiency improvements, and energy efficiency initiatives. Externally it enables the communication of the Environmental Impacts of its products. And, when applicable, it enables comparisons of systems that serve the same function.

Considering the Value Chain

The relevance of a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) depends on a thorough understanding of the value chain of the good or service—from cradle to grave. Methodological choices (consequential or attributive) and the definition of the assessment scope are crucial for the quality of the results and their relevance as a guide for action or communication.
